About us
Select Coins & Banknotes - now trading on the Internet as aussiecoins.com -
began in 1979 as a mail order business specialising in Australian predecimal pennies and halfpennies. As we have grown we have expanded into other areas of Australian numismatics with a focus on high grade material.

We endeavour to maximise the value of your numismatic investments by minimising the costs of each purchase. We achieve this by:
Focussing on high grade coins, where appreciation is greatest
Purchasing stock at low prices through contacts worldwide

Keeping business overheads low .

Most of our sales are now through this website thus avoiding costly advertising elsewhere. Feedback on this website is warmly invited.

Our numismatic gradings
Our gradings are generally conservative. Our Choice Unc or Gem coins are genuinely uncirculated and brilliant. Our coins graded "lightest toning Unc" are often graded elsewhere as Choice Unc or Gem. Similarly, our CFU banknotes are genuinely crisp, flat and uncirculated with no blemishes whatsoever.

The following explains our abbreviations.

Coin grading terminology

Grading
Abbreviation
Detailed explanation
Fleur de Coin
FDC
Literally 'flower of the die', absolutely flawless. (Only used by us for proof issues and exceptional circulation issues.)
Gem Uncirculated
Gem
The highest grade for any coin minted for circulation. No wear whatsoever, no handling marks, full original colour with no detracting toning. Near perfect strike.
Choice Uncirculated
Choice Unc
No wear whatsoever, handling marks from the production process only, but must be minimal. Copper coins may have light toning, silver coins may have a natural patina. Strike not necessarily strong.
Uncirculated
Unc
Not ever used in circulation. No wear at all on high points, clear fields, and often with some original mint lustre. May show very minor bag marks or light scratches due to bulk handling procedures in most mints.
Extremely Fine
EF
Close to uncirculated, but probably taken out of circulation after some handling. Often with considerable original mint lustre, but may show light marks in the field. No significant wear on design high points.
Very Fine
VF
All lettering and design details clearly defined. High points show minor wear only. Some field and rim marks evident. Quite attractive.
Fine
F
Significant wear on high points, some marks evident in the fields, but clear lettering and designs. Free of any disfiguring corrosion, scratches or dents.
Very Good
VG
All lettering and design features clearly distinguishable, but considerable wear and surface marks evident. High points may be quite flat through usage.
average circulated
ave
Considerable wear, but quite collectable, especially in complete date sets.
about
a
Denotes not quite, but almost. For example, aUnc is significantly better than EF but not quite Unc.
good
g
Denotes better than. For example, gEF is better than EF but not quite aUnc.

Uncirculated
Unc
Not ever used in circulation. No wear, soiling or significant blemishes. May show a very minor crinkle or corner rounding due to handling at the bank or in collections. Typical is the 'teller flick' common to brand new notes obtained from retail banks.

Ufold
Not used in circulation. No blemishes other than a centre fold resulting from the once common bank teller practice of releasing new notes in bundles of ten secured with an elastic band.
Extremely Fine
EF
Close to uncirculated, but probably taken out of circulation after some handling. Will have signs of limited handling but no major flaws.
Very Fine
VF
Generally clean, undamaged and attractive, but signs of significant circulation.
